This highly regarded textbook provides a unique clinical reference for all pediatric surgeons. This new edition analyzes and updates what is known about long-term outcomes in pediatric surgery and urology. The editors have succeeded in bringing together critical reviews written by leading international experts in pediatric surgery and urology. The second edition of this successful and popular textbook has been completely revised and updated with new chapters on urolithiasis, small bowel transplantation, pancreatitis, and breast disorders and a completely new section on trauma. An understanding of long-term outcomes is critical if individual surgeons and health policy makers are to achieve optimum results in current clinical practice. This is an essential reference source for pediatric surgeons and urologists, pediatricians, adult specialists, and others dealing with the sequelae of childhood surgical problems.

'It is an excellent book, well written by a host of experienced surgeons reviewing the results of the surgery of their particular sub specialties and interests … This book should not only be bought by departments of pediatric surgery and pediatric urology but should also be read by all surgeons and trainees who operate on infants and children.' British Journal of Urology'… institutional experience and expert clinical review of the literature make the text current and applicable to daily practice … A book that emphasizes outcome rather than diagnosis and procedures has become essential, as health care moves to measures of efficacy, safety, acceptability, and cost effectiveness …heartily endorse this work to my colleagues.' Robert J. Touloukian, JAMA'Pediatric Surgery and Urology is an impressive text providing a unique and comprehensive view of the entire spectrum of surgical and urological conditions found in neonatal and paediatric patients. … It is surprising to discover a surgical textbook which may find its way onto the shelves of anyone who is involved in managing neonates, infants or children with long-term effects of surgical intervention. It is even more rare to find a book which should be an essential reference for those practising in such a potentially broad field, from neonatologists to paediatric/adult physicians, surgeons and urologists. This book should provide the cornerstone of practice in these fields.' Archives of Disease in Childhood'… this is an essential reference for pediatric surgeons and urologists and should be required reading for all trainees. It would be of interest to pediatricians and any adult surgeons undertaking general surgery of childhood. This is the only book this year that I've read practically cover-to-cover, and I don't think you can get much more of a recommendation than that.' Journal of Pediatric Urology'This is superbly written with significant emphasis on long-term outcomes. The chapters are authored by experts who holistically provide up-to-date evidence for contemporary clinical practice. … This is an ideal text for a paediatric surgical trainee preparing for his or her exit examination. It encompasses all aspects of governance, and provides a template for accepted surgical practice and a benchmark for measurement of outcomes.' British Journal of Surgery

This is a book of very specific interest ie paediatric surgical disease and its treatment hence it is targeting a narrow group of people who have an interest in this field at an advanced level. This means that it will certainly be of benefit for the ST3 and over trainee and for the specialist in Paediatric Surgery. It covers effectively the entire field of action of paediatric surgery and I enjoyed thoroughly reading it through and through during my preparation for the European Exam (part 2) FEBPS. I am sure it will be equally good for the Part 2 FRCS(Paed). Therefore this is not a book for the novice and the reader needs to have a good theorhetical and clinical background on paediatric surgery. Outstanding chapters of an overall excellent book are those on hydrocephalous and spina bifida, inflamatory bowel disease and abdominal surgery and oncology. "Minutes" of the specialty like circumcision are given equally close attention. Despite the fact that this is a book on outcomes of treatment the inevitable involvement of numerical figures and statistics has not affected adversly the "readability" of the book which is not a conglomeration of literature references . I spotted a couple of minor spelling errors but other than this editing of the chapters was up to the highiest possible standard. Investing on this book was worthwhile to the last penny.Xenofon S.
