What are nightmares? Are they simply the result of meaningless and random neural firings of an overactive brain? Or are they a window into our most deeply submerged hopes and fears? If you are one of the ten to fifteen million adults in the U.S. who have at least one terrifying or disturbing dream a month, you'll want to read this book. Dr. Alex Lukeman is a master in the field of terrifying and difficult dreams and has more than twenty years of experience treating patients. He believes that nightmares can be an important resource for self-discovery and self-knowledge-when properly examined, nightmares can often lead to the solution of troubling problems-problems you may not even consciously know you have. This book is a practical guide for dealing with our most haunting dreams. The techniques and suggestions suggested herein will provide you with results and relief from nightmares, while offering advice on how to learn from the harrowing images and emotions they produce.

This book is a practical guide to dealing with nightmares, written by a psychotherapist with twenty years' experience of working with dreams; his premise is that nightmares are there to serve us. They are not random, meaningless horror-shows but a wake-up call from the unconscious; if we take the trouble to investigate them, we can help ourselves greatly. I admit I am a little uneasy with attempts to rationalise the unconscious - it seems a little too much like trying to explain the whole of mathematics solely in terms of the multiplication tables - yet this is a well-presented and genuinely helpful book. The main section is comprised of a series of chapters each dedicated to a common theme - attack, demons, pursuit, etc. Dr. Lukeman's is a reassuring, positive presence. He stresses that he cannot provide easy answers but is insistent that with study of the underlying dynamic of our dreams we can formulate our own understanding. This in itself is quite empowering and helps to remedy the helpless-victim mentality that nightmares can instil. There are also chapters on children's and teenager's nightmares and a quiz to determine what might be causing you stress (although chances are that if you are having regular nightmares you may already have a good idea what this is anyway). Each chapter concludes with an easy-reference section of questions and practical exercises. ...One last word of warning: don't make this book your bedtime reading; the many samples from other people's nightmares provide great raw material for endless terrifying invention!
