This book immediately gives you a professional impression from the specially designed box that it is in. For medical students, provided you have an understanding (even basic) of childhood developmentnand health, this is a useful book. Throughout the book a consistent style of drawings/illustrations that is realistic to life further enhances the clarity provided within the text itself. The structure of the book is broken down into 19 sections, consisting of 127 chapters. Each chapter begins with an introduction before explaining the ethology and pathogenesis of the disease in view, relating it to the clinical presentation. The book is written in such a way that in numerous places it could be used to gain a greater understanding of a clinical condition/disease in both adult and paediatric medicine.Section 1 on the care of the acutely ill child is perhaps one of the most useful for an early years medical student. It clearly explains methods of resuscitation, what shock is, causes of an acute abdomen,,, and most importantly for medical students at all stages is chapter 12 on child abuse and neglect. The online content that can accompany this book allows you to access the content of this book while on the move from any portable device which is very useful when commuting to hospital placement or university.Competing Interests: Elsevier Student Rep
